Complete Toronto Transit Guide for FIFA Fans

Getting around Toronto during the World Cup doesn't need to be stressful. Toronto has solid public transit, and once you know how it works, you won't need a car or expensive taxis. Here's everything you need.

Step 1: Get a Presto Card

Before anything else, get a Presto card. It's a reloadable transit card that works on the TTC (Toronto's subway and streetcars), GO Train, UP Express, and most regional buses. You can buy one at:

  • Pearson Airport (Terminal 1 and 3 ground floor)
  • Union Station (multiple kiosks)
  • Any major TTC subway station

The card costs $6 to buy. Load it with cash — $30–50 is a reasonable starting amount for a week. TTC single fare is $3.35. Transfers within 2 hours are free.

Getting to BMO Field

BMO Field is at Exhibition Place on Toronto's waterfront. The easiest route:

🚇 The Local Route (Recommended)
  1. 1. Take the subway (any line) to Union Station
  2. 2. Exit to the Harbourfront and board the 509 Exhibition or 511 Bathurst streetcar westbound
  3. 3. Ride ~10 minutes, exit at Princes' Blvd
  4. 4. 5-minute walk to BMO Field main entrance
Total: 20–30 min from most downtown hotels. One fare covers the whole journey.

From Pearson Airport (YYZ)

Don't take a taxi from the airport. The UP Express train runs every 15 minutes from Pearson to Union Station in 25 minutes and costs $12.35 with a Presto card. From Union, follow the BMO Field route above.

A taxi or Uber from Pearson to downtown costs $50–70 and takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic. The UP Express is faster and cheaper almost every time.

From the Suburbs (905 Area)

If you're staying in Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, or Markham, GO Train is your friend. GO Trains run from all major suburban hubs directly to Union Station. From Union, it's the standard streetcar route to BMO.

Driving: Don't

Seriously. The Gardiner Expressway is gridlocked on normal days. On match days, with 30,000+ people converging on Exhibition Place, you'll sit in traffic for an hour that would have taken 20 minutes by transit. If you must drive, arrive 90 minutes early and use the Exhibition Place lots.

After the Match

Post-match, TTC adds extra streetcars on the 509/511 routes. Expect a 15–20 minute wait. The platform fills up fast — get there right after the final whistle, not 10 minutes later.

Uber surge pricing will be high immediately after matches. Either pre-book, walk a few blocks east before requesting, or take the TTC.
